MEET THE ARTIST
Born beneath the sun-soaked skies of Jamaica and shaped by the quiet strength of migration, Kayla Cowan is a multidisciplinary artist whose work lives in the liminal—in the stretch between memory and becoming, flesh and canvas, fear and release.
Now based in Canada, Kayla paints, tattoos, and designs with a heart tuned to evolution. Her practice is a language of layers—bold colour, tangled texture, and emotional weight—unfolding stories of transformation, self-reclamation, and ancestral echoes.
In 2025, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from York University, a milestone on a path carved by intuition, experimentation, and a deep reverence for change. Her paintings often spill across large canvases like internal landscapes: ropes of trauma, tides of healing, and the sacred mess of growth. She brings abstraction and realism into conversation, using both to speak to the unspeakable—what it feels like to unravel and rebuild.
As a tattoo artist, her work becomes even more intimate—a permanent collaboration between skin and story. Each mark is a ritual, a reclaiming, a breath. Her designs are thoughtful, tender, and grounded in trust.
Kayla’s Jamaican heritage hums beneath every brushstroke and needle mark. Her art is not just visual—it is a vessel: for resilience, for emotion, for the infinite revisions of the self.
In all her forms—artist, designer, tattooist—Kayla moves with one truth: we are always becoming. Her work is a reflection of that motion—bright, layered, evolving, and always reaching toward the next version of herself.
